Deuteronomy is a book in the Bible full of the "how to" do life as group of people, as Gods chosen people. I started to read a specific passage this morning, and (like any good person with attention issues) found myself reading further and further into the depths of what this book of rules was asking of us, and promising to us.
What do these things mean for us today? Are these things still true for us today? How do we do what God had asked the nation of Israel to do a hundred and something years ago today? If God is the same yesterday today and always then there is a boatload, no... an ocean load of wisdom here for us to dive into and live in.
-More specifically I noticed God saying, "When I do this, you must do this..."
"Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors." (8:1)
-What he would ask of them was a follow-up to what he had begun. Safeguarding them against the ways of other nations that would turn them away from God.
-The honesty in the book is staggering as well.
"The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. (7:7-9)
We can apply every single one of these spiritual truths today to our own lives. No, we will not run out and kill someone with a different belief then us, but rather safeguard our mind and our exposure to things other than what God has asked us to be part of. We can walk into new territories both physically and spiritually with confidence that God has gone before us to already begin the process he will see to completion. We are just to follow up with what he has already done.
I'm excited to explore these truths and what they mean specifically to me today, and corporately what they mean for us today.
